High-Tech Treatment
EMFACE® by BTL uses synchronized radiofrequency energy and muscle stimulation to alleviate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. Radiofrequency energy raises tissue temperature to alleviate symptoms associated with muscle spasms and improve circulation. At the same time, high-intensity focused electrical stimulation (HIFES®) targets the jaw muscles to ease pain and improve range of motion. We are the only dental office in Columbus to offer this advanced treatment.
Oral Appliances
Dr. Brett Helton and Dr. Alexis Gibbs prefer treating TMJ disorders with EMFACE due to its comfort, efficacy, and minimal disruption to a patient’s normal routine. However, we also offer custom oral appliances. Dr. Helton has designed and created oral appliances for years and can discuss this treatment method with you if you prefer.
Find Relief from Painful Symptoms With Non-Surgical TMJ Treatment
- EMFACE is FDA-cleared to treat TMJ dysfunction and associated pain, relieve symptoms of muscle spasms, and help maintain or increase jaw range of motion.
- Treatment can reduce dependence on mouthguards and BOTOX® injections for patients who prefer a more modern and less invasive treatment method.

Understanding TMJ Disorders and Their Symptoms
Temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull. If the TMJs become inflamed, it can lead to a condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder. The result is a variety of uncomfortable symptoms, such as:
- Chronic jaw pain
- Radiating facial pain
- Jaw stiffness
- Ear pain or ringing in the ears
- Discomfort in your shoulders, neck, and upper back
- Difficulty opening your mouth
- A clicking or popping sound when moving your jaw
Since the symptoms of TMJ disorder can be caused by other conditions, undergoing a professional diagnosis with your dentist is important for accurate treatment.
Treating TMD With EMFACE
EMFACE requires no downtime, surgery, or needles, so treatment can be a quick stop in your day.
- Diagnosis: You will first meet with Dr. Helton or Dr. Gibbs for a consultation at our Columbus office. They will perform a comprehensive evaluation of your teeth and jaws and take digital X-rays to determine if you have a TMJ disorder. If you do, you can schedule your first EMFACE session.
- Treatment Session: A member of our team will place the applicators on your cheeks and jaw before turning on the device. Patients often say that treatment feels like a gentle, heated facial massage. One of our assistants can perform your treatment, allowing for better availability and treatment when you need it.

- Repeat: Most patients need four treatment sessions spaced about one week apart. Sessions last about 20 minutes each, but your plan will ultimately be tailored to your needs. Some patients notice an immediate improvement in their symptoms, though it can take the full series.
- Maintenance: Maintenance sessions can be scheduled every 6-12 months to keep jaw pain and other TMD symptoms at bay.
We Also Offer
Oral Appliances
TMJ disorder most often develops when jaw misalignment, orthodontic problems, or bruxism (teeth grinding) cause excessive pressure on TMJs. In these cases, an oral appliance may be a safe and effective solution.
Dr. Helton can choose an oral appliance that is most appropriate for your symptoms and customize it based on impressions of your dental arches. Your custom splint will move your jaw into the proper position to reduce strain on your TMJs.
Most patients will only need to wear their oral appliance at night, but those with more severe symptoms may need to wear it more often.

Other Solutions for TMD
If we find that TMJ disorder is the result of dental damage or tooth loss, Dr. Helton or Dr. Gibbs may recommend a restorative procedure:
Dental Crowns
Dental crowns can be used to restore a tooth that has caused an imbalance within the bite.
Dental Implants
Dental implants can replace missing teeth to balance the bite.
Specialist Care
Specialist care may be recommended in severe cases.
